It received generally positive reviews, with praise for Carrey and Reeves' performances. It grossed $446.4 million worldwide on a budget of $122 million, becoming the highest-grossing film in the franchise. A sequel is set for release on March 19, 2027. The plot draws elements from the video games Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) and Shadow the hedgehog (2005) The film was announced in February 2022 during ViacomCBS's investor event before the release of Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (2022). Due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, filming for animated characters began in July 2023 in Surrey, England.
