In 2003, Mattel acquired the rights to produce Batman, Superman, and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited figures for DC Comics, taking over from Hasbro. The first line, featuring 6-inch figures with around ten points of articulation, was released in April 2003 in comic stores and later in September at mass retailers. Each wave included Batman (re-released in subsequent waves), a sidekick, a villain, and three variants. Collectors appreciated the initial figures, particularly Zipline Batman and the first villains—Joker, Mr. Freeze, and Killer Croc—but noted that villains were harder to find.

In 2005, Mattel released Bane and Scarecrow, along with new Batman figures overseas. These included higher articulation and a functional Batsignal accessory for Batman. However, plans to bring these figures to the U.S. failed, disappointing fans. The DC Super Heroes line was launched in late 2005, featuring re-released figures like Bane, Scarecrow, and Killer Croc with updated designs.

The toy line included two San Diego Comic-Con exclusives: a 2003 Batman figure based on Neal Adams' art and a 2004 variant where Batman removed his cowl. The Batmobile (toy no. B4944) was recalled in 2005 due to safety hazards, with 14 reported injuries, including four requiring medical attention.

This line marked Mattel's entry into DC superhero figures, blending comic-style design and articulation while facing challenges like limited availability of certain figures and a product recall.
