Richard Dominguez
Richard Dominguez (born Eufrancio Ricardo Dominguez on September 22, 1960) is an American comic book artist and freelance storyboard illustrator, best known for creating the character El Gato Negro through his imprint Azteca Productions. Born in Dallas, Texas, to Ricardo and Juanita Dominguez, he grew up in a historically disadvantaged area of West Dallas. His passion for comics began at six when he sneaked into his uncle's room to read comic books. After studying commercial art and life drawing, he worked various jobs before focusing on his artistic career. Dominguez conceived El Gato Negro in the mid-to-late '80s, inspired by classic superheroes like Batman and Japanese animation. Initially part of a planned superhero team called Team Tejas, Dominguez shifted focus to El Gato Negro, who made his debut in 1993. The character gained popularity, leading to sequels and appearances in other media, including a potential live-action film. Dominguez founded Azteca Productions in 1993, publishing El Gato Negro as its flagship title. The company also released Team Tejas with writer Michael S. Moore and later expanded into other projects like *Lucha Grande Comics* and *Tonatiuh the Almighty*. Dominguez returned to active publication in 2004 after a hiatus during the speculative market downturn.
