John Murray died 1753
John Murray (died 2 July 1753) of Philiphaugh, Selkirk, was a Scottish politician who served in the House of Commons from 1725 to 1753. He was the eldest son of Sir James Murray and Margaret Don, with two brothers and four sisters. His sister, Ann Murray, married John Pringle, Lord Haining. His maternal grandfather was Sir Alexander Don, 1st Baronet of Newton, Berwick, while his paternal grandparents were Sir John Murray of Philiphaugh, MP for Selkirkshire, and Anne Douglas.
Murray succeeded his father as hereditary Sheriff of Selkirk from 1708 to 1734. His family owned extensive estates in Ettrick, Yarrow, and Philiphaugh, acquired in the fifteenth century. He was elected Member of Parliament for Linlithgow Burghs in a by-election on 6 April 1725, returned unopposed in 1727, and again as MP for Selkirkshire in 1734 and 1741. In 1747, he faced opposition but won after his opponent died before the poll.
On 31 December 1711, Murray married Eleanor Hamilton, eldest daughter of Lord Basil Hamilton and Mary Dunbar. They had four sons and two daughters: Basil (d. 1747), John (1726–1800), David, Charles, Mary, and Margaret. His eldest son died young, so he was succeeded by his second son, John. Eleanor died in December 1783.
Through his children, Murray became a grandfather to notable figures, including James Murray of Philiphaugh, Eleanor Murray (wife of Sir James Naesmyth), Charles Scott-Murray of Danesfield, and Sir Alexander Don, 5th Baronet of Newton.
