Butterfly Lodge

The Butterfly Lodge, also known as the James Willard Schultz Cabin, is a historic structure located in the Apache County of Arizona. Built in 1912 by Isaacson Brothers from Benny Creek, the cabin was initially constructed using hand-hewn logs with double saddle notches and bark on one side for exterior facing. The lodge measures 32 feet, 6 inches in width and 39 feet, 10 inches in length, with the shorter side serving as the front.

Over the years, several additions were made to the cabin:

The cabin features a unique design with tongue-and-groove doors and various window configurations. Notably, the front door is six feet, two inches tall by two feet, ten inches wide, while the northwest side includes windows of varying sizes and types.

In popular culture, the cabin gained recognition through James Willard Schultz's 1920 story, *In the Great Apache Forest; The Story of a Lone Boy Scout*, which brought international fame, particularly in Europe. Additionally, poet Henry Herbert Knibbs wrote a tribute poem, "Apuni Oyis," published in his book *Riders of the Stars: A Book of Western Verse*.

The Butterfly Lodge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, reflecting its historical and cultural significance.
