Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta Muggia

The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta is the parish church of Muggia Vecchia, located near Trieste, Italy. Historically, it was believed that Muggia Vecchia had been abandoned after its destruction by the Genoese in 1353, but it was actually destroyed by the Triestines due to disputes over salt pans, with the basilica remaining standing. The current village of Muggia Vecchia is relatively recent and serves as the site of the diocesan vocation center for the Diocese of Trieste, managed by Don Andrea Destradi since 2014.

The parish of Muggia Vecchia was once very important and served by a chapter of canons before its destruction. The basilica itself has elements dating back to the 11th century, with most of the structure rebuilt in the 13th century, including the bell tower. It underwent restoration between 1950 and 1951 and became a parish church in 1982.

The basilica measures 12.25 × 18.30 meters and features a "facciata a salienti" with a small bell gable. Its interior is divided into three naves, retaining original elements such as the ambon, lectern, and two large marble balustrades from the Lombard period (8th-9th century). The basilica also contains frescoes dating from the 13th to the 15th centuries.
